IU is new to you, but the people who have been where you are today have some advice. We asked students what they wish they had known as a first-year student.

We know there is a lot to navigate as you begin your IU journey. You are living away from home, meeting new people, and gearing up for your classes. IU is new to you, but the people who have been where you are today have some advice. We asked students what they wish they had known as a first-year student.

Develop good habits

As a new College student, you have possibly never had as much personal freedom and as many options to fill your time, but you need to practice some discipline to be successful.

“Go to every class first semester; do not develop the habit of skipping class!”

“Develop a habit of exercising. Hit the gym. There are fun group exercise classes I love being a part of. For me, I like incorporating fun into ‘exercising.’ So dancing, kickboxing, and unwinding with a yoga class.”

“Don’t procrastinate important work. Don’t wait until deadlines.”

Explore academic possibilities

Your college career is a time for intellectual exploration—it’s okay to try things out and change direction.

“Don’t feel tied down to a path, college is about exploring possibilities.”

“Don’t be afraid to pursue what you love or change your major; you are discovering yourself!”

Try these study tips

Our students have a lot of thoughts on how and where to study.

“For coffee—SOMA or Starbucks. For silent study spaces—Walter Career Center Lounge, Wells Library West Tower Floors 3-5 (you can also book a room), and IMU Sugar & Spice in the evenings is good for having people around.”

“I am a huge fan of making lists and knowing when my assignment is due and when I have my exams coming up. Do not wait until the last minute, make a plan and stay ahead.”

“Use Zotero (or another reference management system) to organize your notes and readings. It is free and easy and if you get organized early, you’ll save so much time and stress!”

“Your professors want you to succeed! Don’t ignore your professor’s advice on how much time their course will require from you outside of class.”

Get around

Managing logistics is a big part of your daily life.

“When I first started at IU, I wish I knew about all the places where you can use your Crimson Card. For example, you can use a meal swipe at a café in Union Street Center.”

“Learn the Bloomington bus routes with the Spot app! It’s life changing.”

Find your people

Some valuable experiences will happen outside of the classroom. Clubs and events are a good way to explore, but also find people who share those interests.

“Every freshman is starting a new journey, do not feel weird introducing yourself to those on your dorm floor or in the dining hall.”

“I wish I knew about the fact that I should have joined more clubs my freshmen year to make friends. Don’t be afraid to, because everyone is in the same boat!”

“Go to on-campus events. They are so fun and a great way to meet people.”

“You will find your people.”

Be kind to yourself

Experienced college students know that taking care of yourself must be a priority if you want to be successful.

“Put ‘you’ first. If you are having an especially tough time reach out to IU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). They can provide you with resources and counseling sessions.”

“If I could give you one piece of advice, it’s that you are right where you are supposed to be! Take it at your own pace and reach out for help when you need it.”
