“I’m always here, and I can help with English; we also have several professors from other areas who come around to offer help,” explained Chris Sims, Educational Resources Specialist. “We can give advice, provide clarification on an assignment, refer students to a tutor in the ARC, or give them a pass to visit their professors’ office hours.”

Sims reports that attendees have appreciated having a collaborative, academic environment where they can decompress and finish their homework. It also helps with time management by allocating dedicated study hours into participants’ schedules.

The study-table concept soft-launched last year and expanded significantly with the start of the 2023-2024 school year. “Originally, our study tables were developed for athletes who needed to improve their GPA—but we noticed many kept coming back, even when they no longer needed to,” Sims explained.

Monday & Wednesday:
9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday & Thursday:
Noon to 6 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This year they’ve opened study tables to all IU Columbus students. Early Start attendees are encouraged to visit, and some instructors require their students to attend. Additionally, all athletic coaches require their players to log a certain number of hours—like Kevin Nolan who requires each player on the men’s soccer team to attend at least 5 hours each week.

Tyler Wright, assistant athletic director, added that any student on any IU Columbus sports team can show you where to find the study tables. “All of our athletes are students first, that’s why we call them student-athletes and not the other way around,” Wright emphasized.

Sims added that there is room for 34 in the study-table classroom at one time. Right now, he gets about 20-30 visitors each day, and he expects that number will grow as mid-terms and finals get closer.
