Are you struggling in one of your classes? Or just stuck on a math problem? Maybe you want another set of eyes on a big paper, or you’d like to practice an upcoming presentation, or get help reviewing for a science exam.

The tutors at the Academic Resource Center (ARC) are here to help.

Paxton Heyne, an IU Columbus junior majoring in education, came to the ARC for help on an essay. She had such a good experience that she started working there herself in January, tutoring math—mostly Finite—for students in all majors.

Paxton suggests students first check the tutoring schedule to make sure the tutor they need for a certain subject is available in person or on zoom when they plan to stop in. And most importantly, she says, “Don’t be intimidated! This is a big, quiet room but everyone is here to help!”

Matt Rothrock, who manages the ARC, echoed that same sentiment. “Please interrupt us! Even if we may look busy, we’re here to help you. I love it when it gets noisy in here because it means students are using our services and getting the help they need.”

Sean Schneider, an IU Columbus senior majoring in biology, started tutoring in the ARC this summer. He works with students looking for help in the sciences and suggests bringing your class notes and specific questions.

“It’s hard if someone just hands me a worksheet, and I’m not sure where they’re struggling. But if they say, ‘I want to go over every question I got wrong on this quiz,’ or ‘I just need help on this type of problem,’ then we can jump right in,” Sean said.

In general, the ARC offers tutoring in math, science, writing and public speaking. However, their tutors can also help with specific coursework in your major, such as nursing, business or education.

Learn more on the ARC website or stop in anytime the library is open.

The tutoring schedule changes every semester. Check the current hours on the ARC website.
