Students have more ways than ever to prepare for the AirPark Campus Career Fair on April 3 (10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., CLC Main Street).
During a lunchtime session on March 26, students can get help creating compelling resumes that stand out in today’s competitive job market, thanks to expertise from recruiters at Elwood Professional. They’ll also share networking tips, like how to start a conversation with a potential employer and developing your elevator speech. The workshop is noon to 1 p.m. in the Landing conference room, lunch is provided, and no registration is needed.
Students are also encouraged to get one-on-one career counseling with Amy Kleinert, Associate Director of Career Services. Before attending the fair, she encourages everyone to update their LinkedIn profile and resume–and she can help!
For example, she says if you’re using a template for your resume or your resume includes a photo, she can help you update it for optimal function and formatting in today’s market. Set up a one-on-one meeting by emailing her at akleiner@iu.edu.
”Amy Kleinert was invaluable in helping me get my resume ready for the application process,” said David Wably, an English major who graduated in December. “The career services offered by Indiana University Columbus are resources that all students should take advantage of.”
About the Career Fair
This year’s Career Fair will be packed with more than 50 employers seeking full-time and part-time employees, as well as interns.
“We have a really great lineup of employers spanning every major we offer, with especially strong offerings in health care and education,” Kleinert said. For example, she is expecting representatives from Columbus Regional Health and Schneck Medical Center, as well as Bartholomew County School District and Jennings Counting School District. (See the complete list of employers.)
“Even for students who aren’t actively seeking employment, I still recommend coming to the Career Fair to see what opportunities are out there,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for networking.”
For students unable to attend the Career Fair but looking for employment, Kleinert suggests the Handshake site for instant access to job openings. All students get free access to Handshake, and Career Services can help with account activation and building a Handshake profile.
Kleinert also posts individual employer campus hiring events to the online events calendar.
After the fair
For the first time, Career Services is also hosting a post-fair session to help students prepare for interviews.
“If all goes well at the fair, students will hopefully have some interviews lined up,” Kleinert said. “We can help them get ready, practice and build their confidence.”
Elwood Professional is hosting a second lunch-and-learn on April 16 to conduct mock interviews and build interviewing skills. Like the first session, it’s in the Landing conference room, lunch is provided, and no registration is needed.
Additionally, Career Services is available to help students throughout their academic life. In addition to job search assistance, Kleinert can help students identify or change majors, and explore potential occupations that match their strengths, interests, and values.
