Are you interested in joining a book discussion about housing inequity in American cities and reducing its negative impacts? AirPark Campus faculty, staff and students, as well as community members, are invited to join three sessions in February to discuss The Color of Law, including a talk with authors Richard Rothstein and Leah Rothstein

There are several ways to get a copy of the book now, allowing plenty of time to read The Color of Law:

  • Check out a copy from the University Library or Bartholomew County Public Library (hard copy, digital or audio version).
  • Limited complementary copies are available thanks to funding support from the Office of Academic and Student Affairs and IU Columbus Diversity Council for those who agree to participate in at least one book discussion (contact Marsha VanNahmen to reserve your copy).
  • The Color of Law and Just Action (also by authors Richard Rothstein and Leah Rothstein) are available from Viewpoint Books at a 20% discount.

In The Color of Law, author Richard Rothstein debunks the myth of “de facto” segregation—the idea that U.S. neighborhoods remain segregated because of income differences, private prejudices, or desire to live with same-race neighbors. Rothstein demonstrates that the government’s purposeful segregation and establishment of American ghettos created the context for conflicts in places like Ferguson, Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Charlotte. In addition, the book shows the opportunity and obligation for policy remedies integrating metropolitan areas nationwide.

Discussions will be lead by:

  • Kevin Jones, Associate Professor of Management and MBA Senior Faculty, IU Columbus Division of Business
  • Ashlyn Aiko Nelson, Associate Professor, IU Bloomington O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs
  • George Towers, Head of the Division of Liberal Arts and Professor of Geography, IU Columbus
If you have questions or would like more information about the upcoming book discussion series, contact Marsha VanNahmen.
