The event was organized by The Ibero-American Institute of the Hague for Peace, Human Rights and International Justice (IHH) at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands.

Matwijkiw was asked to present on some of the work she did in her capacity as Chair of the U.S. Working Group for an international and interdisciplinary research program that examined crime as associated with corruption in the context of foreign policy. In her talk, she outlined some of the obstacles for progress.

International criminal law is one of the research areas that Matwijkiw explores as the IU Presidential Fellow. Her global engagement at The Hague was also supported by an International Mobility Grant from IU.

“I saw a direct link between The 11th Ibero-American Week of International Justice at The Hague and my own current research activities,” expressed Matwijkiw. “What I witnessed and observed not only underscored my own idea about international law, philosophy, and ethics. I also realized just how timely my research for a special issue on Crime and Corruption for International Criminal Law Review (Brill Publishers) really is. In this, I examine the role of ethics and amoralism through a market (crime and corruption) lens and this is an approach I believe can help to move the field forward.”
