The Black Philanthropy Circle works with Indiana University and the Indiana University Foundation to formulate programs for engagement and philanthropy in higher education to support Black alumni, faculty, staff, students, donors, and allies. Q: What does the Black Philanthropy Circle do?
A: Through philanthropic giving, we help address educational issues faced by IU’s Black communities. We create programs that improve the recruitment, retention, and degree attainment for Black students, faculty, and staff on IU’s seven campuses, and two regional centers, and beyond.
Q: What is the importance of Black history in your work and to you in general?
A: Black history — and the history of Black IU — is important in our work, as it acknowledges contributions and challenges faced by Black students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the Black community, while also investing in the future of Black IU.
Q: What are some exciting projects the current BPC initiatives?
A: We are currently accepting grant proposals for our second annual grantmaking cycle through the Affinity Giving Grant program. Grants will be awzarded to projects that make Indiana University more welcoming, equitable, and accessible for the Black community.
Q: How does the BPC play a part in uplifting Black communities?
A: We believe that diversity, inclusion, and equity are indispensable elements of an IU education and we are unequivocally committed to taking a leadership role in making an IU education as universally accessible as possible to the Black community. We are committed to continuous improvement of the recruitment, retention, and support of Black students.
Q: How can others get involved with the work you do, or even just the kind of work you do?
A: Apply for BPC grant funds. Any IU student, faculty, staff, or unit with a vision and capacity to manage grant money are encouraged to apply. Participate in the Black Philanthropy Circle.
