Crimson Cupboard began as a student-run food pantry, offering free food to students who are food-insecure. Last March, Crimson Cupboard expanded and joined the Division of Student Affairs, providing the pantry with resources for a staff member and part-time graduate students. With departmental support the pantry is now open four days a week, totaling 10 hours. The number of students visiting the pantry has more than doubled, as has the food supply.
With the department’s help and increased donations and volunteers, Crimson Cupboard is able to help meet more students’ needs.
According to national data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 30% of college students are food-insecure, meaning that they lack consistent and dependable access to nutritious healthy food, obtained in socially acceptable ways. Applying the national average to our campus, this means that around 1 in 3 IU students fit the definition of food insecurity, but often students are not aware that the term ‘food insecurity’ applies to them.
Food insecurity is not constant – most students who are paying for tuition and living expenses fluctuate between security and insecurity depending on deadlines for payments. The holidays are also one of the most common times to experience food insecurity. For those concerned about food access in the coming month, the pantry is a resource meant to be used.
How the Cupboard Works:
Located at Campus View Apartments (800 N. Union Street), Crimson Cupboard operates on the honor system, and visitors will never be asked to provide financial information. At the first visit they will be asked to fill out a form with basic general information, and at each subsequent visit will be asked their name.
