Not traveling for spring break? You’re not alone. From March 15 to 22, Indianapolis offers plenty of ways for students to relax, explore and recharge without leaving the city. Indianapolis is part of your college experience. This spring break, explore it!

Close to campus

Walking distance: 5-15 minutes from IU Indianapolis
Budget: Free to low-cost
Best for: Low planning and spontaneous outings

Just a few steps away from campus, White River State Park offers one of the simplest ways to rewind during break. Walk the canal, bring a blanket for a picnic or catch a sunset with friends. No ticket or car required.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail connects downtown neighborhoods through a scenic bike trail and pedestrian path. Rent a bike, explore art or stop at a local café along the way.

Cultural and creative recharge

Drive time: 10-15 minutes from campus
Budget: Check student pricing and CrimsonCard discounts
Best for: Indoor plans and creative inspiration

Explore art galleries, gardens and seasonal events like Art in Bloom at Newfields. Spring break is a chance to slow down and take in exhibits you might not have time for during the semester. Students are eligible for a free one-year membership, which provides year-round access and additional perks by filling out the application form.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis offers interactive exhibits that make for a fun and unexpected afternoon, whether you visit with friends or family. Highlights include “Take Me There: Peru,” where visitors are immersed in Peruvian culture, and “National Geographic Treasures of the Earth,” an archaeology exhibit that lets guests explore historical mysteries like pirate shipwrecks, Egyptian tombs and other ancient discoveries.

High-energy outings

Walking distance: 15-25 minutes walk from campus
Drive time: 5-12 minutes to each attraction
Budget: Moderate
Best for: Group plans and active days

Seasonal events like xZooberance at the Indianapolis Zoo add entertainment and themed activities throughout the spring. The festival runs March 19 through April 19 with activities scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., Thursdays–Sundays. Visitors can enjoy live DJs, karaoke, animal encounters and spring-themed activities.

North Mass Boulder is one of the largest privately-owned bouldering gyms in the United States. The facility features indoor climbing walls, fitness spaces and yoga studios, making it a popular destination for college students looking for an active outing. Visitors can purchase a day pass to try beginner-friendly climbing routes or participate in fitness and yoga classes offered throughout the week.

Stretch your budget out with CrimsonCard discounts

Before heading out, make sure to check your student perks! Jaguars can access local discounts at participating restaurants, attractions and retailers through the official CrimsonCard program. Using your CrimsonCard can help lower admission costs and save on meals throughout the city.
