Eli Mercer’s journey in tennis began at the age of 5 when he first picked up a racquet, sparking a lifelong passion for the sport. From the early days of childhood playful rallies to grueling practices and competitive tournaments, tennis has been more than just a pastime for Eli—it has become a defining element of his identity and a cornerstone of his aspirations. This sport has not only shaped his character but also fueled his vision for the future, blending his love for the game with his academic and professional goals.

The turning point in Mercer’s tennis career came during the pandemic when he decided to fully commit to the sport with the vision of playing at the collegiate level. This decision set him on a path of intense training, self-discipline, and strategic planning.

Navigating the recruiting process was not without challenges, but for Eli, IU Indianapolis stood out among the options. Staying close to his Carmel, Indiana roots while pursuing excellence both on and off the court was a priority. The university offered an ideal blend of competitive tennis, a welcoming team culture, a supportive coach, and the prestigious academic opportunities of the Honors College and the Kelley School of Business. Once Eli saw how well the school’s offerings aligned with his goals, the choice became crystal clear.

Transitioning from high school tennis to the competitive Division I collegiate level came with its share of challenges. However, Mercer embraced the shift, learning valuable lessons along the way. For Eli, the individual nature of tennis is both a challenge and a motivator. The sport’s inherent accountability—where every mistake or victory rests squarely on his shoulders—drives him to consistently perform his best on the court.

One of the most striking differences Eli observes between high school or junior tournaments and college-level matches is the atmosphere. Collegiate competitions are electrifying, with dynamic energy fueled by spectators cheering and shouting, a stark contrast to the traditional quiet of most tennis matches. This lively environment adds intensity and excitement to the game, pushing players to thrive under pressure.

Beyond the court, Eli shines academically. As an honors student, he is currently enrolled in the prestigious Honors I-Core Program at the Kelley School of Business, a rigorous interdisciplinary program that integrates marketing, finance, operations, and team dynamics. A key element of the I-Core experience at IU Indianapolis is a semester-long, cross-functional project, where students collaborate with Central Indiana businesses, exploring opportunities for new products or services. Eli’s team is working with a company specializing in referee assignments for NCAA sports and professional leagues, focusing on streamlining the transition of elite referees into professional leagues. This hands-on experience not only enhances Eli’s business skills but also ties into his passion for sports, preparing him for a future in sports management and marketing.

His passion for sports and business has opened the door to several professional opportunities. Eli is currently working with the renowned broadcaster Cracked Racquets as their Social Media Manager. In this role, he oversees all company-affiliated social media accounts and co-leads a small team of interns, producing high-quality, college-focused tennis content.

Through this position, Eli has gained valuable marketing and management experience, alongside firsthand knowledge of what it takes to run professional tennis tournaments. Over the summer, he worked at the Cranbrook Tennis Classic, a professional tournament in Michigan, where he created engaging social media content for Cracked Racquets while gaining valuable behind-the-scenes insights into organizing and managing a professional tennis event.

Nonetheless, the highlight of Eli’s professional journey so far was his internship with the Cincinnati Open, one of the premier professional tennis tournaments in the world. Part of the Master’s 1000 series, the Cincinnati Open is regarded as a crucial stepping stone for players aiming for the Grand Slams. Eli was captivated by the excitement of the competition and impressed by the global nature of tennis, with fans and players from all over the world. These experiences solidified his ambition to pursue a career in the tennis industry, with his ultimate goal and dream job being to one day serve as the tournament director for events as prestigious as the Cincinnati Open.

“I was working in the ticket office of the Cincinnati Open. I was meeting a ton of different people that were going to the tournament, and it was just cool to see how international tennis is,” Mercer said. “There were people from all over the world. I met people from Asia, from several countries in South America, like Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico, as well as spectators from all over Europe. It was truly a life-changing experience.”

In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Eli is deeply involved in extracurricular activities. As a Cabinet Member for IU Indianapolis in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, he represents all university athletes and works to enhance their experience.

“I hope to make the student-athlete experience better for everyone. The Horizon League is a mid-major league that does not have as much money as other conferences as the Big Ten or SEC, but showing athletes that we care about them and the experience they have is what moves me to be on the committee.”

Reflecting on his athletic career, Eli is proud of several key moments. In high school, a defining memory was winning the deciding match in the state finals against their biggest rival, North Central, after coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the third set. In college, one of his most memorable moments came during his freshman year, when his match clinched a victory against Dayton.

Eli finds inspiration in his teammates, friends, and himself, striving each day to improve. He offers words of encouragement to aspiring student-athletes aiming to compete at the Division I level:

” Success in tennis, like life, is all about balance. It’s not just about playing hard but also about managing your time, staying on top of school, and keeping your emotional well-being in check. If one of these falls off, the others will too. So, work hard, embrace the grind, and make sure you enjoy the journey because that’s how you truly improve and find success. “
